Reverse Adrenal Fatigue, Raise Cortisol

Profound improvements in health – especially where mental and physical energy are concerned – are often experienced by those who engage in hormone balancing therapies. Using Licorice Root Extract to raise cortisol is one of the most common methods clinicians use to improve their patients’ energy and mood. It forms the cornerstone of therapies which often include other hormones, such as pregnenolone, DHEA, and progesterone.

Under stress, your adrenal glands secrete the steroid hormone cortisol. This hormone is part of your body’s natural stress response, the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. The HPA axis triggers reactions that influence metabolism, inflammation, blood pressure, immunity, brain function, and much more. Even when cortisol levels are low, and the adrenal glands fatigued, the HPA axis keeps working to produce more cortisol, contributing to a vicious cycle of fatigue and frequent illness.

Glycyrrhizin – Energy Supplement, Cortisol Support

Licorice Root Extract supports the adrenal glands when cortisol levels are depressed. It contains a substance known as glycyrrhizin, which is the sweet-tasting component of Glycyrrhiza glabra (licorice) root. Glycyrrhizin blocks an enzyme called 11-beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase from converting cortisol into cortisone (which lowers the cortisol reserves you need for health). BioMatrix’ LRE possesses a potent concentration of glycyrrhizin to help preserve your naturally produced cortisol. It is not to be confused with deglycyrrhizinated licorice, which is relevant to digestive concerns. †

The Licorice Root Extract Advantage

BioMatrix Licorice Root Extract is the only licorice root extract supplement that states exactly how much of the active ingredient – glycyrrhizin – is in each drop. Other brands may not even know how much they have in their product and suggest high doses which could be dangerous and/or counterproductive. Our standardized strength per drop is 0.84 mg of glycyrrhizin. This allows you to confidently manage your dosing one drop at a time with the utmost precision. †

  • Licorice Root Extract (Glycyrrhizin) – Our liquid form of licorice root extract is highly bioavailable due to its oral and lymphatic absorption. Precision dosing means your product will last longer and ultimately save you money versus cheaper products.
  • Glycerin (from Certified Sustainable Palm Oil) – Derived from an environmentally sustainable source of tropical palm oil to act as a base carrier for the active ingredients. For more information on this sustainability certification, visit the RSPO website).

FAQ: Licorice Root

How do I take this product?

While BioMatrix cannot instruct customers how to use these products due to FDA regulations, LRE is designed to be taken orally. Keep the product in your mouth as long as possible.

When should I take this product?

Timing of hormone delivery is not something BioMatrix can advise on. It is best to work with a health professional experienced in BHRT, and ideally involving lab tests to dial in the precision of the treatment. And then many nuances between delivery methods; oral pellets, creams, pills, oils, etc.

How does the glycyrrhizin ingredient work?

The glycyrrhizin compounds block 11-β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase, the enzyme responsible for the conversion of cortisol to the inactive cortisone. This results in a stabilization and/or increase in cortisol levels.

How many drops per bottle?

Approximately 1,200.

How many milligrams of licorice are in each drop?

10.5 mg per drop of the extract itself. But the active ingredient is the number of importance (and rarely shown by our competitors). Our standardized strength per drop is 0.84 mg of glycyrrhizin.

Science-Based Ingredients

Licorice root extract is derived from the Glycyrrhiza glabra plant. The nutrient-rich licorice root extract contains numerous bioactive molecules, with the main active compound being an antioxidant saponin called glycyrrhizin that†:

  • Supports healthy cortisol levels – Glycyrrhizin inhibits the conversion of cortisol to cortisone, and studies show that participants who supplemented with this active ingredient had significantly increased cortisol levels [1]. By supporting cortisol levels, you can enhance your innate stress response and boost stress resilience.
  • Promotes a balanced mood – By balancing the HPA axis that connects the brain and adrenals, cortisol support may enhance mood and cognitive function. One study found that patients with mood imbalance who were supplemented with glycyrrhizin for four weeks experienced significantly reduced depressive symptoms and increased remission [2].
  • Maintains immune defense – Glycyrrhizin targets prostaglandin-induced inflammation and the harmful oxygen radicals created by microbes. To demonstrate its role in immunity, researchers investigated the antiviral activity of glycyrrhizin and found that it blocked replication of the certain viruses more significantly than several prescription antivirals [3].
  • Helps defend against hot flashes – Studies show that menopausal women who supplemented with glycyrrhizin-containing licorice for eight weeks experienced reduced hot flash severity and duration [5]. Similarly, postmenopausal women who supplemented with licorice for 12 weeks experienced significantly reduced hot flash duration [6].
